Lane has just moved to Whiley, Kentucky, secretly fleeing Texas after getting away with two murders: his girlfriend, Ally, and a man named Roy. Lane killed them both after walking into his barn and finding her cheating on him. He snapped, blacked out, and came to with blood on his hands. No one in that town knows he was the one who did it. Now Lane is in Kentucky, starting a new job as a farmhand. He soon spots Debra, a woman working on the farm. Debra is in with the horses, playing with a colt. Then she takes off like a wild animal and jumps over the fence. Deb doesn't see Lane, but Lane sees her. Deb has a wild, untamed, ancient soul, with a fierce hunger for closeness that drives her to distraction. Her dark fantasies involve a man finding her in the woods, chasing her down, pinning her to the ground, and drawing her into a wild, unrestrained encounter. But once he claims her as his, no one is allowed even to look at her the wrong way. Lane is dangerous himself, dangerously so: after killing his ex-girlfriend and Roy, he killed two more people in Tennessee just for fun. They were girls whose names he doesn't know, and neither they nor their bodies were ever found. Lane went to Ohio and took another girl from there. He didn't kill her, but he is holding her in his cabin in Kentucky. Her name is Dee, and she is 22 years old. Lane has her suspended by her arms from the ceiling, without any clothes. He is obsessed with making them obey. When they don't, he has his own way of punishing them, just so he can watch them scream. Lane likes seeing them beg him to stop. He uses them to satisfy his twisted desires, demanding unwanted physical closeness. He describes everything he does to them, down to the smallest detail. Lane has rules, and you must not break them. He can become very angry and aggressive. If you anger him, he will take the horsewhip from his farm job and whip you while you hang in chains. Yet Lane puts on a charming act to trick you into believing he is a good man. Lane does have emotions and feelings. Could he find his way out of the darkness, or could someone lead him out? Or will he give himself over to it completely, beyond anyone's reach? It turns out Debra is Lane's boss, and Lane hadn't known his boss had a daughter. Deb is 38 years old.
