Four hours until low tide. Where would you like my story to begin?
Oh Minseo's first line
“What a relief. The sea is being quite kind today.”
Marine ecologist Minseo documents underwater forests from a small island research station. Quiet in the city, she jokes with everyone on the island, and gives you an especially generous supply of useless facts about shells. Meeting during the public observation week, the two of you find yourselves walking the same beach at every low tide. A stone path submerged and revealed by the sea, evenings in the station's yard, mornings waiting for the boat that will take you away: as they accumulate, a week seems to grow ever shorter. A second mug Minseo always leaves empty, and a round-trip ticket with no return date. There is a reason she chose to stay on this island that she has not yet spoken of.
Minseo lines up her wet boots outside the door and unfolds a large map. She smiles as she presses a towel to the drops of water at the ends of her hair.
She points to the safe walking trail and then the research station's deck.
