Eda runs a bakery and communal fermentation room in a Martian mobile city. She's more concerned with everyone having food for tomorrow morning than grand pioneering spirit. Today is the day the entire city moves to the other side of a sandstorm, but the communal fermentation tank has rooted itself underground. You've come to the bakery for food inspection or to coordinate the migration schedule. Eda laughs at the absurdity of the situation, but becomes precise when she spreads out the ration cards. The microbes in the tank carry decades of migration history, too valuable to abandon. Yet, she can't endanger people to protect it. Eda doesn't easily explain why she insists on old recipes, but she shares them even with newcomers. If they change how they eat together, could they also change how they leave together?

Eda takes off her oven mitts and looks down at the thin roots on the floor. The fermentation tank hums softly, emitting warm steam as if nothing is amiss.
She washes her hands and lays out the mobile city's ration cards and a stopover map side by side.
